Bearing Failure and Motor Misalignment

The opener motor uses ball bearings to spin the drive shaft. Over time, factory grease dries out or moisture causes rust. As bearings degrade, they lose their shape and grind against the race. This creates a vibrating growl that intensifies during movement.

Loose mounting brackets can also cause the motor assembly to shift. If the motor sits at an angle, the drive shaft pulls against the sprocket awkwardly. This misalignment forces metal components to rub together. A technician realigns the motor and secures it to eliminate grinding at the source.

Chain Tension and Sprocket Wear

On chain-drive models, a loose chain causes a grinding sensation. If the chain loses tension, it may jump a tooth on the sprocket. It can also rub against the metal rail. This creates a clattering noise that resonates through the garage.

The sprocket teeth can also wear out and lose their grip. Technicians resolve this by adjusting the tensioning bolt and checking for “hooked” teeth. If the sprocket is worn, it requires immediate replacement. Proper tensioning silences the system and prevents the motor from fighting unnecessary slack.
